MathEdge at the 2005 Primary Math World Contest

The MathEdge team most recently competed took place at the 2005 Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC). A team of four students from the Bay Area, representing the United States, participated in the PMWC, which was held from July 16 to July 20, 2005. Forty-three other teams from countries such as Australia, Bulgaria, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Macau, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and South Africa also competed in this international tournament. There, the MathEdge team took home three awards: 3rd place as a collective team for the Po Leung Kuk Cup, 4th place in team prizes, and “second honor” in individual prizes (awarded to team member Felix Sung).

Team participation in the PMWC is by invitation. Each country is entitled to send a team consisting of a leader, a deputy leader, and no more than four contestants. PMWC is the only international math contest that exists for the junior high age group today.

The team consisted of:

Student: Akash Gupta, 13 years old; Chaboya Middle School, San Jose

The contest was highly competitive and for being a first-time entrant, the team’s performance was phenomenal. Many of the other countries represented at the tournament had long process to select their final team from an initial base of tens of thousands of students, whereas the MathEdge team members were not subjected to the same intensity of training and elimination. MathEdge team was selected from sixty-one 5th to 7th graders from 25 different Bay Area schools who tried out.

    The PMWC aims to:

    • Provide an opportunity for the exchange of information of primary school mathematics education throughout the world.
    • Foster friendly relations among primary school students from different countries.
    • Discover the mathematics potential of gifted primary students among different countries.
